The Second Official Voltron Art Show
Saturday, November 16th, 2024 at 7pm
We here at Toy de Jour are super happy to announce our last art show of 2024 and it's a BIG ONE!
So big in fact, we are just one of FIVE locations this show is going to be held at!
That's right, all five locations will have original Voltron artwork, so each location is a completely different experience.
We are the 'Blue Lion' location (which has nothing to do with the color or art type) and we are joined by four other stellar shops:
- Red Lion - Mike's Vintage in Dayton, OH
- Black Lion - Apotheosis Comics & Lounge in St. Louis, MO
- Green Lion - Meep Meepleton's World of Fun in Madison, WI
- Yellow Lion - Faraday Toys in Greenwood, IN
Will you be able to visit all five locations and do the 'Voltron Run' during the month that all the art is displayed?? If so, folks that visit all five locations will be entered in to win a prize package from Voltron Official! More info coming on the Voltron Run coming.

...Go See a Star War...
Friday, December 9th at 7pm
We’re doing a “What if?” theme where we let the artists decide what they’d want to see in a Star War that never actually happened. But basically it’s “do some weird shit based on that space opera we all love”. So there’s gonna be some rad stuff.
ALSO! Our bffs Bruiser Queen are going to return to do an acoustic set live in the shop during the show! 🤯
For those of you who remember the Before Time, you’ll recall that @brusierqueen helped us christen the new space by playing our grand re-opening party.
We’re super excited to have them back once again and can’t wait to see if they dress up like the Modal Nodes or the Max Rebo Band…
Okay so stay tuned for more updates, cause we will definitely remind you a couple times between then and now.
But go ahead and put it on your dang calendars now. Invite yourself on Facebook here.

Walrus Mania, Group Art Show
Friday, February 21st, 5pm - 9pm
Junk Fed has finally gone mad and he's inviting all of you to join him in his Walrus Mania. Please, for the love of all things holy, help this man with his sickness.
Toy de Jour and Junk Fed present 'Walrus Mania', a group exhibition featuring 30 artists working in painting, sculpture, toy art, illustration, and photography. The curated works will pay tribute to the vintage Star Wars Walrus Man action figure.
Originally sculpted by Stephen Geddes for the now defunct Kenner toy company and released in 1979 as part of the second wave of Star Wars action figures, Walrus Man is one of the most vividly iconic action figures of its time. With a complementary contrast of orange and blue, flippered feet, and vaguely walrus-like head, the figure is a departure from the character depicted in the film, and remains a favorite among toy collectors.
The Walrus Mania exhibit was conceived by visual artist Todd S Rogers, under the moniker Junk Fed, out of a personal obsession with the aesthetics of the original action figure and the creative liberties taken in its design, separating it from the creature seen briefly in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. The character that so many came to know as Walrus Man thanks to the Kenner action figure was later given the name Ponda Baba by the 1989 Star Wars roleplaying game sourcebook Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope. The Walrus Mania exhibit conjures a time when the Star Wars universe was young, undefined, and unlike anything that had come before it.
Contributing artists include BattleBabies, The Block Watch, CantinaDanny, Cassie Hart, chooseplastik, Dollar $lice Bootlegs, Galaxxor, Green Plastic Tunnels, Nathan Hamill, Handmade Stuffs, Healeymade, Ironoclast, Jellykoe, Junk Fed, Killer Bootlegs, KrymsynGardImmoral, Lab Monkey Number 9, Mad Monster Lady, ManOrMonster?, Mortar Heads, Mr. Walters, Oscar Cisneros, Pez Banana, poopbird, Super Group Hugs, Terra, The Sucklord, The Tennessee Wolfman, Tiffany Flanagan, and Undead Speed Equipment.

Grand Re-Opening Party; Same Trash, Bigger Store!
7pm, Saturday January 25th 2020
Come christen the new space with us because we did it - we tricked another landlord to let us put all our farts in a larger space. So now we're gonna let you come in and look at how poorly we've set everything up initially and party with us.
Seriously you guys, we have so much space now - we saw the storage area in the back and that alone is literally the size of our old space.
Yeah of course there'll be Doritos, a weird Oreo flavor, we'll order pizza, and all the regular stuff - but you guys... our pals Bruiser Queen are gonna play the opening!!! (More info on exactly what time as the date grows nearer).
The whole crazy thing is sponsored by Revolution Brewing, aaaaaand our BBFs at Logan Arcade are gonna invite us all down the street for an after party when we decide to kick you all out.
Bonus - here's the full list of names we came up with when trying to figure out what we should call the party:

Space, In Vaders - group art show
Friday, the 13th, 6pm - 10pm
A new group art show featuring vintage Darth Vader
carrying cases painted by various artists. All pieces will be available for purchase during and after the gallery opening.
If you're sick of trying to figure out a gift for that Star Wars geek in your life, this is the perfect way to get them something unique, that's also an awesome original art display piece that utilizes a piece of vintage history.
The Darth Vader cases were an absolute must back in the 70s/80s as we were all running to our friend's homes with our heroes & villains in tow. Now, sadly these cases have lost their main purpose and tend to sit in our shop without much love.
So we've stockpiled them with help of other local collectors and have passed them out to some of our favorite artists to work with.
Drinks and snacks on hand, come meet some of the artists, browse the vintage and newer collectibles also in the shop available for purchase and maybe take home a piece of amazing Star Wars artwork.
Here's the event on Facebook.

Saturday, September 21st, starting at 2:30pm

The one and only Super Sucklord, Famous New York Pop-Artist and Chinatown Supervillain, is gracing Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood with his dubious presence for one action-packed day of bootleg toys, hip-hop, and refined conversation.

Expect special Suckadelic drink specials and (maybe) some one-a-kind event promo materials you can add to your collection. This is your chance to worship The Sucklord once again, congratulate him on an evil scheme well done, and convince him to keep on coming back to our great city. Event is 21 and over. (sorry kids)
This Suckadelic Spectacle is brought to you by the fine folks at Collecticon Toys, Toy de Jour, Galerie F, and Logan Arcade.
The Sucklord is a New York City Pop Artist and Television Personality known for his subversive Action Figure mashups and Supervillain aesthetic. Operating out of Chinatown NYC under the Brand SUCKADELIC, The Sucklord’s Line of self-manufactured Bootleg Toys steal shamelessly from STAR WARS, Vintage Advertising and All manner of Pop Culture Trash. Packaged in layers of ironic self-Mockery, His shoddy looking wares have inspired an entire secondary Art movement, with dozens of entrepreneurial Toy Bootleggers creating their own versions of highly referential, low-Rent interpretations of their favorite figures. The Sucklord has appeared on Several Reality TV programs such As BRAVO’S Work of Art: The Next Great Artist and The Dating Game; using those venues as an opportunity to create spectacular pieces of Live Performance Art. An extensive YouTube library includes several hours of material ranging from fuzzy Toy Commercials, The SUCKHOUR Talk/ interview show, and the ongoing Toy-sploitation movie serial TOY LORDS of CHINATOWN. The Sucklord has shown work all over the USA, Japan, Europe, and Southeast Asia. He has been featured in The New York Times, The Village Voice, and National Public Radio’s ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. Misunderstand him at your peril!

Come check out original artwork featuring the lighter side of the force. Orange flight suits! Green and blue lightsabers! Old wizards and young hopefuls!
Also Star Wars crap always makes great Christmas gifts. Stop trying to guess if that nerd if your life already has a certain action figure or not. Get them something original while supporting local artists and businesses.
Per usual, we'll have food and dranks. But feel free to bring whatever you want, byob style.

Toy de Jour's 3rd Annual 'Not Going Out of Business Party' and
TMNT Group Show Gallery Opening
Friday March 3rd, 6pm
Trust us, we're just as shocked as you guys. But we're still here and it's been three years, so let's celebrate with some fud and drank and look at some original art and custom toys!
This year we're combining our anniversary party with a new group art show with pieces inspired by everyone's favorite teenage mutant ninja turtles. That's right - The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
This time not only are we asking artists to turn in a traditional piece of artwork (original paintings, digital paintings, screen prints, etc.) but we're also looking for folks to do custom Ninja Turtles figures if they like! We're a dang vintage toy store! Why haven't we done this before?? Cause we dumb. But year three is when we set all this straight. We got this.
We'll post more info as the date nears, but you have been warned. T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!
We have pizza being supplied by Paulie Gee's Logan Square and beer from Revolution Brewing! Look at all that Logan Square love!
Invite yourself on FB to get reminders, the event is here.

Hello Chicago! Gallery Opening by Console Crush
Saturday November 5th at 5pm
Console Crush is for every kid who squealed with delight when opening a Nintendo on Christmas day, only to find themselves throwing controllers across the room thanks to endless [bleep]ing medusas, smug siblings, and those god-damned eagles in stage 3-2. We love our consoles and they love us back, but the unending cycle of death they inflict upon our heroes can be a bit much at times, can’t it?
All items are available for purchase and will remain on display throughout November.
Why Even Go?
CUTE: Fun and friendly prints of (hopefully) your favorite game consoles!
CREEPY: Artwork and one-of-a kind custom paper toys featuring characters who just couldn’t make the cut. They’ve died over and over again, it’s all our fault, but that’s OK.
CUTE + CREEPY: Game Over plushies. Life is hard, let’s get cuddling!
About the (f)Artist:
Christopher Schons is an artist and designer who recently moved from Minneapolis to Chicago. He started his art career drawing comics like Earthlight for TokyoPop and Barack the Barbarian for Devil’s Due. He has since moved into the world of interactive design, video games, and whatever else he is distracted by at the moment. Proceeds go in part to his growing Be@rbrick tab at Toy de Jour.

Something Is Going On Here (A 'Stranger Things' Group Art Show)
Gallery Opening Friday, September 16th 6pm
For the love of all things Eggo, Toy de Jour has used it's time machine to go back to the 80s and grab a bunch of talented (f)Artists to compile a 'Stranger Things' group art show!
// Side note: the story of us going back and grabbing all these folks for this show was later written and adapted into what you all now know as Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but that's getting us off track and a show for a later date... //
We all love Barb. So let's see how many renditions we'll have during the exhibit! I'm guessing four, but who knows! We will have the show going (no sound for all the weirdos that haven't seen it yet) and of course we'll be making Eggos for everyone.
The current roster of (f)Artist is but not limited to: Courtney Kuebler, Antonio Orellana, Elijah Edmunds, Infected Resin, Jillian Marsala, Kevin Budnik, Chris Schons, Shawn Smith, Mike Norton, Mike Turner, Chris Nania, Shea Cahill, Enzo Garza, Sean Dove, Tom Kelly, JunkFed, JB Roe, Einxel and Ali 6!
Invite yourself on Facebook.

SmudgeGoria! by Paisley Fawn - Gallery opening Saturday 08.06.16, 5pm
Welcome to SmudgeGoria - where all your worst fears (and favorite horror movies) have manifested themselves in the form of scary (and kinda cute) Smudge plush from the mind (and sewing machine) of Paisley Fawn!
I hit my parenthesis limit in that last paragraph so let's see if I can do the rest of this without them. (Probably not...) Come check out all the brand new Smudge creations and see if your favorite horror character is making an appearance. Don't worry though, we'll keep all the lights on so it won't be too scary.
Standard legal copy: We will have fud and drank, but feel free to byo whatever. All items will be available for purchase at the show.
Check HERE for more info on Paisley Fawn! And invite yourself on FB here.

"I Hate This Painting" - A Ghostbusters-inspired art show, Friday June 3rd, 6pm
Toy de Jour is celebrating the release of the new Ghostbusters film this summer by hosting an art show inspired by the men and women in tan jumpsuits. We've asked participating artists to pull from any and everything Ghostbusters; be it film, cartoon, video game, toy or heck - even the OTHER cartoon! So we're certain there will be at least ONE Slimer piece you won't be able to live without. We're working on a trivia-based giveaway too - so it may help to study-up on your GB history. Though some of the answers might be handed to you since we'll have the cartoons and movies playing during the event. Per usual - there will be dranks, fuds and probably some dudes with 'tudes. And yes, there WILL be Ecto-Coolers. Invite yourself on Facebook. |
Toy de Jour is just as shocked as everyone else that they are still here two years later. They plan to celebrate that with their neighbors, friends and enemies, Saturday March 12th, 2016.
If we had to choose, we'd would say our favorite Toy de Jour memory of 2015 was getting to host The Man Who Shot Luke Skywalker, Kim Simmons and his vintage Star Wars product photography. Or was it when they were included in the Best of Logan Squarist? Wait. Maybe it was when The Chicagoist featured us as one of The 13 Best Ways To Feel Like A Kid Again In Chicago?
Toy de Jour encourages folks to stop by if their hungry for free pizza from Liz & Sam's favorite pizza place, Papa Johns.
YEAH THEY KNOW THEY LIVE IN A PIZZA TOWN BUT THEY COME FROM A PLACE WITH TERRIBLE PIZZA AND IT IS ALL THEY KNOW. (See: Imo's St. Louis Style Pizza).
If you show up prior to 5:30 you can enter to win one of dozens of door prizes ranging from a vintage Love-Seat that has outworn its welcome (photo link courtesy of Victoria Johnson @DNAinfo), to action figures you had no idea you needed, to...fake poo.

Battle Babies Destroys Toy de Jour - Monthly (f)Artist Gallery Opening
Saturday, February 6th from 3pm to 6pm
What or who is Battle Babies?
First off, it's not a what. He's a person. His name is Brad Rader. Secondly, he's a guy who loves toys and everything about them.
Not blessed with the desire or work ethic to study the fine
arts or be properly trained by toy masters, Brad walks this earth alone like a toy art ronin making toys by his own rules.
Important info:
Come check out new works and smell the man himself during his gallery opening at Chicago's Premier Trash Store. Junkfood and stuff you shouldn't drink will be provided to distract you while we try to steal your wallet.
Unimportant info:
Brad hails from the sleepy little hamlet of Kingsport, TN. Raised by a pack of Bays Mountain wolves and taught ninja focus at the age of 11 by a middle school janitor named Perry.

Gallery Opening - October Monthly (f)Artist; Mr. Walters, aka: Nerfect
Friday 10/2 6pm - 9pm
Our first-ever pumpkin-spiced event! We'll be drinking drinks, looking at the new art installation pieces by Mr. Walters while surrounded by too many toys and just the right amount of farts. (The farts are the only thing pumpkin-spiced at the gallery opening.)
A little bit about this month's (f)Artist:
Gentleman artist, friend to animals, craftsman of artisanal novelties, and amusing biped, Mr. Walters resides in scenic Berwyn, Illinois with his charming wife, and their familiars. He enjoys conjuring artwork and drinking the occasional soda.
Mr. Walters has exhibited his work internationally, and performs various feats of illustration and graphic design for a plethora of clients. He is also the proprietor of Nerfect Artistic Novelties, which produces numerous wares featuring his artwork and characters.
Side note about the (f)Artist by Toy de Jour: If you like Native Foods, you already have something to start a conversation with Mr. Walters with! "Did you try any of the new chicken wings?" There ya go!
We're also trying to figure out how to get a piñata hung for the event...

The Complete and Utter Destruction of Toy de Jour - Friday 6/12 6pm - 9pm
(June Featured (f)Artist; Tattoo Artists of Animal Farm Tattoo)
In an attempt to gain more ground for their ever-increasing, unruly empire; the unstoppable forces of Animal Farm Tattoo have announced that they will conquer the humble space known to locals as 'Toy de Jour'. Setting up this new outpost in a location fairly close to their current homebase will not only give the bandits an emergency refueling station when needed, but also doubles as a good venue for them to showcase their collected artworks. A nicety so rarely afforded during times of turmoil that the 'Farmers' have come to know as their normal way of life.
Please join us for the initial takeover, it's bound to be a lot of fun! We'll have like snacks and drinks and stuff.

The art will be up for the entire month for purchase offered both in the original pieces or prints as well.

Book Release & Signing: The Art of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Saturday 4/18, 2 - 5pm
Authors Tim and Steve Seeley will be on hand for signing as we celebrate the release of Dark Horse's 'The Art of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe'.

We have a limited number of books coming in so we added pre-orders of the books up on our site. Grab them there to guarantee you get a copy at the event. If you pre-order a book but can't make it to the event, your copy will be waiting for you at the store the next time you arrive and will be signed by both Tim and Steve.
If you pre-order, you will be entered to win a very rare Skeletor Hikari gold figure by Funko! More info here:

April Featured (f)Artist Jen Lemasters Gallery Night, Thursday 4/2/15 6-9pm
Jen is a warrior from a nearby rival space gang. While she spent nights training at the Scum and Villainy Academy, she spent her days studying art at Ohio State University.
In 2008 she graduated from one and was kicked out of the other. Though the BA in Art and Technology is displayed proudly in the hull of her current rig, the Notice of Dishonorable Discharge due to 'excessive atomic noogies' and 'intergalactic-headlocks', hangs right above it.
Her current favorite fighting style "partial disintegration", while her current art style is focused more on taking old mediums and applying new ideas, lately working with 70's summer camp type projects.
Come check out her work and/or challenge her to a fight on Thursday, April 2nd from 6 - 9pm.
Make it official and RSVP on Facebook!

Toy de Jour's One Year Anniversary Farty & Monthly (f)Artist for March 2015 - Saturday, March 14th, Noon - 10pm
We're super excited to celebrate our one year anniversary with the people that made our store what it is today. To our regulars that keep our lights on, to our families that support us from miles away, to all of our friends and followers on the various social media outlets (#lizisthere), to the jerks that said we'd be out of business by now (if you know us, you know that spite is one of our biggest drivers) - we owe this all to you.
Seriously. If you talk to us about it all while we're drunk you'll probably get us to cry.
Also that day, continuing on with our efforts to support the local art scene, we'll be featuring work by Jaime Knight, our Monthly (f)Artist for March. Come check out her work and by "check out" we mean "buy".
With all that said, we want every one of you to save the dates folks - Saturday, March the 14th, we will have our One Year Anniversary Farty and as Liz put it; "We want this shit to be crazy enough to get the cops called on us."
Here's a link to the FB event to help social media remind you that it's happening.
